Gavorrano
— Welcome to the Sunshine of Italy

Gavorrano is a charming little village in southern Tuscany, perched on a hillside—or more precisely, on the side of a mountain. Tucked away from the usual tourist routes, it has a peaceful, sleepy atmosphere where the local social life mostly revolves around the friendly “old-timers” gathering in the village square.
Below the village stretches a vast plain that meets the Mediterranean Sea and the nearby town of Follonica. From the heights of Gavorrano, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea, the island of Elba, and on clear days, even Corsica in the distance. Hidden just behind a mountain lies the mysterious island of Montecristo.

Our Apartment

The apartment is located in the village’s medieval heart, the centro storico.
We don’t know its exact age, but some neighbors say it could date back to the 1100s. If so, it might once have been part of the old monastery, though it’s probably a few hundred years younger.

Today, it combines modern comfort with much of its original character intact. The ceilings are nearly 4 meters high, featuring traditional Tuscan style with sturdy chestnut beams and warm, reddish-brown tiles.

From the balcony, about 6 square meters in size, you can enjoy views of the mountain, the old mine, the valley below, and beyond that, the Mediterranean Sea, Elba, and sometimes even Corsica.

The balcony is only around 170 cm wide, but still perfectly sized for enjoying your morning coffee, having dinner, or simply sitting back with a book and sipping on a Campari.

The living room has a sofa bed that converts into a narrow double bed (1.40 m wide), and the bedroom to the right has two single beds. There’s also a sturdy inflatable extra bed and a travel crib available. For comfortable living, the apartment suits up to 2 adults and 2 children, or 4 adults.
The dining tables in the kitchen and living room are designed to be carefully moved between the rooms or out onto the balcony. In the living room, we’ve set up a long table and even hosted parties for neighbors—around 14 people comfortably.

Pontone Beach

The nearest beach is in Pontone.

If you head right from Pontone towards Follonica, you’ll find many beaches along the way and beyond the town. Near Follonica, the beaches offer restaurants and sunbeds for rent. If you go left instead, towards Castiglione and then turn right towards Punta Ala, you’ll discover long, quieter stretches of sand.

To get to Pontone from our village, turn left towards Follonica at Filare, about halfway down the mountain. Along both the northern and southern stretches of the coast, you’ll find a mix of private beaches where you can rent sunbeds, as well as beautiful public beaches where you’re free to spread out your towel without any pressure to rent.

Wineyards

There are nearly 20 wineries in the region. Three of the nearest wineries are on the way to Pontone. It’s on the left along the long straight road. Keep going straight, then turn left at the next intersection, and after a few hundred meters, you’ll see La Pierotta on the right. If you continue straight instead, Il Pupillo appears on the left just after the turn toward Scarlino.
If you take a right at the roundabout towards Bagnio, then right again at the sign toward Grosseto, you’ll find Rigoloccio winery. These small wineries produce Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC and other unique blends.

From each winery, you can taste and buy wine by the bottle or in bulk if you bring empty bottles. We keep 5-liter glass bottles in the kitchen.

We’re close to the Chianti region, known for countless wineries with wines ranging from “okay” to outstanding. It’s perfect for a day trip—Greve in Chianti and its surroundings are great stops.

Other day trips include Montalcino, famous for Brunello, Montepulciano with Vino Nobile, and San Gimignano, known for its white Vernaccia wine. Closer by is Scansano, proud of its Morellino di Scansano.

Day Trips Nearby

Siena, Florence, Rome, and Pisa are all within easy reach for day trips. Siena and Pisa are about 90 km away, taking 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Florence is roughly 2 hours away, Rome about 2.5 hours, and Bologna around 3 hours by car.
Elba Island
Elba is another great day trip, reachable by ferry from Piombino. You can go with or without a car, though bringing one lets you explore more of the island.

Volterra & San Gimignano
Volterra, known for its Etruscan history and alabaster art, is well worth a visit. Nearby San Gimignano is famous for its medieval towers and white Vernaccia wine.

Massa Marittima
Just 20–30 km from Gavorrano, this charming town boasts a beautiful square, a lovely church, shops, and restaurants. In summer, open-air operas are performed here—tickets can be bought in advance.

Etruscan Tombs
You’ll find ancient Etruscan tombs in Roselle, Vetulonia, Massa Marittima, and other nearby spots.

Beyond these, the area is dotted with small, charming villages waiting to be discovered and made your own special hideaway.

Our Favorite Things to Explore

Saturnia is home to warm, natural hot springs where you can take a relaxing swim. Just a friendly tip—avoid wearing silver jewelry, as the sulfur-rich water can cause discoloration.

At the old mine on the edge of the village, you’ll find a fascinating mining museum and, in the open quarry, a unique theater and music venue called Teatro delle Rocce. During the summer season, it hosts everything from opera and musicals to jazz, rock, and theater. This southwestern part of Tuscany, known as the Maremma, has its own rich history—one best discovered in person.

A great olive oil is produced by the Galleotti family. They grow and press their own olives and sell their oil directly from the farm, right along the main road to Scarlino Scalo. You can also find excellent olive oils at the wineries Il Pupillo, La Pierotta, and I Campetti.

For golf lovers, there’s a nearby course—Il Pelagone Golf Club di Toscana—that some of our guests have highly recommended. About 20 km away in Punta Ala, you’ll find another great golf course. So why not stay in Gavorrano, enjoy as much golf as you like, and still experience the charm of a true Italian village?

Getting Around

You’ll get the most out of your stay in Gavorrano if you have a car. While there are public buses that stop at and leave from the village square, making trips to places like Follonica possible, there’s so much to explore nearby that’s hard to reach without a car.
There are four nearby airports to choose from if you’re renting a car: Bologna, Florence (Firenze), Pisa, and Rome. Driving times to Gavorrano are about 3 hours from Bologna, 2 hours from Florence, 2.5 hours from Rome, and just over 1 hour from Pisa.

Keep in mind that these times start once you’ve reached the main roads outside the cities. Depending on traffic, especially during rush hour, it can take quite a while to get out of the airport area.
